I'm thankful for the wonderful, heartwarming stories which have been shared with me by Mobility Worldwide's delivery ally, Partners for Care. Connie Cheren, and her staff in Kenya are never ceasing in sharing remarkable stories which donors and volunteers like you are making possible through your gifts of time, money, and talents.
The county of Kilifi is on Kenya's east coast. My memories and emotions are stirred, having visited this place in 2023.
This is the story of Musa and his young son, Abdi.
Twelve years ago, Musa lived with his family in Uwanja wa Ndege village. He and his family were living a simple life, earning money to buy food, by selling produce in the local marketplace.
Then suddenly, Musa and his family's lives changed in a drastic way.
On that day, Musa and his wife noticed that their son, 2-year-old Abdi who had begun to walk a few months earlier could no longer rise from a seated position. Growing worse over time, soon Abdi could no longer walk as his legs stiffened.
Mobility for Abdi came in two forms. Either he could crawl or be carried. Such a harsh future for this young child.
With no local medical help available to the family, they could not have known that little Abdi was suffering from spinal stenosis.
Yet, Musa was determined that his son would attend school. Every day, he carries Abdi on his back to school, and then home again.
Musa has faithfully carried Abdi to school for the past 8 years.
When Musa learned that the Partners for Care team would be visiting a neighboring village with Mobility Carts, he scooped up his now 14-year-old Abdi and carried him all the way to the place where the Carts were being distributed.
There the PFC staff saw a dedicated dad, a young man in need, and a look of hopeful expectation on both of their faces.
Young Abdi and his father, Musa, are both so happy that donors like you have made his mobility a reality!
PFC staff helped Abdi by giving him a Mobility Cart; the gift of mobility, independence, and a new beginning!
Musa happily said, "At last!"
With joy, he shared the great relief it was for his son Abdi to receive this gift of mobility and a new life.
