Resolving the Dissonance of Two People's Needs

Writer: Sam SingerSam Singer

A person who is either born with leg disability acquires a state of permanent dependence on the family, society, and community. The most unfortunate part is that all those meant to assist the immobile individual have an inherent need to be free and independent. There is a clear dissonance of these two people's needs. The person meant to assist will always have to balance between their own needs to be free, to compete, to work, to socialize and at the same time help a dependent family member.

Sadly, the immobile family member is therefore frequently considered as baggage to carry along that slows one down.

The pain of being different is real.

It's a fact. Without kind and caring donors and volunteers like you, children suffering with a leg disability, rendering them immobile, do not attend school in Kenya. While there isn't a formal rule barring immobile children from government schools, the existing infrastructure and societal challenges create significant barriers to their access to education.

This is the story of Naiperiae Ita

"I am Naiperiae Ita, the seventh born and seven years old. I was born disabled. I had been crawling or being carried by my mother throughout my life and had never been able to attend school."
